Elle and Blair Fowler, two coffee-loving girly girls who started posting fabulous hair and makeup tutorials back in 2008, sat down with us and talked disco balls, clear mascara, and the problems with gel eyeliner!
M: What was your first experience with makeup?
Elle: My mom, when I was going into sixth grade, took me to Clinique and got me the three-step skincare system. I remember that was like the most expensive thing in the world! It was like they just spent my college fund!
Blair: You took me to Walmart -- I remember this silver stuff to put on my eyes (silver eye shadow).
Elle: Because that's what I was wearing! I was five years older, so I was like 'I know everything about makeup!'
Blair: I remember you got me a clear mascara because Mom wouldn't let me have black. I still buy that clear mascara for my eyebrows!
M: Did you have any beauty disasters when you were younger?
Blair: Yeah. So speaking of the silver eye shadow, I would put the eye shadow on still, years later. I was in seventh grade, so I was like thirteen, and I would put glitter on over it, like not glitter for your eyes -- glitter from Michaels, chunky glitter. My boyfriend at the time told me one day that I looked like a disco ball.
M: How did you develop the makeup skills you have today?
Elle: When I was in middle school, I'd get up an hour and a half before school and I would get ready. I'd do my full face of makeup and curl my hair every single day from sixth grade until twelfth grade.
Blair: I wasn't like that. I would wear sweats and a hoodie!
M: What is it like working together? Can you describe tell us about a typical day of yours?
Elle: So basically we will get up, most of the time we'll have coffee together, and then decide what we're doing. Right now we're working on our second novel, so that is really exciting for us and that's taking up a lot of our time. We film videos for our individual channels and we'll do that in our own rooms so it gives us a little bit of space. We're working on our makeup line and it's a lot of collaboration.
What's the most challenging part of doing makeup?
Blair: Fake eyelashes!
Elle: Gel eyeliner with a brush! I do it every day and I still struggle!
