Beautiful Creatures

Hey M Girls,

We've been counting down all week long, and now the big day is finally here -- Beautiful Creatures hits theaters today, a.k.a. Valentine's Day! M Editor Jen was lucky enough to visit the New Orleans set back in June and has since seen the flick not once, but twice (yep, it's that good!).

Here are our reasons why you should absolutely check it out!

1. Everyone loves a love story
If you've seen our March cover, "Star Love Secrets" you know that we're in LOVE with love! Enter Beautiful Creatures, a story about love winning out against all odds. The flick tells the tale of star-crossed lovers Ethan and Lena and their fight to stay together. When we met stars Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert it was totally clear that they had great chemistry, and it definitely translates on screen!

2. It'll make you LOL
So, believe it or not, I found myself cracking up at many points during the movie! Star Alden Ehrenreich is super-funny (on AND off screen!) but the real laughs come from his quirky BFF Link, played by Thomas Mann (you may remember him from Victoria Justice's Fun Size). His one-liners will have you laughing 'til you cry!

3. It's magical...literally!
Yep, this movie will make you fall under its spell! Since Lena is a caster (a.k.a a witch with powers) she can control all things nature related...which gets pretty cool visually. Our fave scene? When Lena has a wee bit of a temper tantrum at a family dinner, things get out of hand! The magic is one of the best parts of the movie.

4. It's totally relatable
That being said, at the end of the day this is just a tale about fitting in -- something we can all relate to! You'll feel Lena's pain as she struggles to fit in with the mean girls who tease her and alienate her every day.

Only one day left 'til the premiere of Beautiful Creatures -- and we could not be more excited! To help prep you for tomorrow's big premiere, check out our exclusive chat with the movie's costume designer Jeffrey Kurland.

M: Can you tell us about making costumes for the world of Beautiful Creatures?
Jeffrey: One of the most interesting things about this movie is creating the different worlds. The world of reality, which is the world of Gatlan, this little town that's nestled into a southern state in the United States. Then there's the world of the Casters, who are the witches,and what their world is like and meshing the two worlds together so you get the exaggerated feeling of the Casters' world and still intermingling it with the world of reality.

M: How do you create a style for each character?
J: Well you do it with a color scheme, you do it with a palette. What does the world of Gatlan look like? What do those clichés look like? And those jocks? What does Ethan look like? As somebody who lives to leave, someone who can't wait to get out of there, how does he stay in that town? And so, what is he about? What is Lena about? Is she like her family, the castors? Is she like those people? No, not exactly, not at all. Who is she? Where does her individual style come from? She's a more mature person, you think of Lena as being slightly older for her years. She's an old soul, and so where does her sense of style come from? It's very individual.

M: What about Lena's necklace? What was is like putting that together?
J: I actually designed and made the necklaces, the charms on their necklaces, the pieces. The bottlecap is there. It's little pieces of what she's gathered together from her past. She pulls from the places she's been. You see on the necklaces the bottlecap, a charm, you know, a piece of a dog, people and places she was a part of. She keeps it with her.

Now that The Twilight Saga has come to an end (aww!) it's time to get hooked on our next movie obsession -- and so far, it looks like it's gonna be "Beautiful Creatures"! It's got romance, magic and a lot of action...we can't wait to see the whole thing!

Are any of you fans of the Caster Chronicles series of books? Here at the M offices, we can't put them down -- and we've got some great news! The first book in the series, Beautiful Creatures is being turned into a movie, hitting theaters next February! If you're not familiar with the series, it circles around

M was super-lucky to visit the set, and chat exclusively with the stars! We asked Alice Englert about the flick, and her character Lena, and she dished to M: "This story is about love, it's about having to find your own thing, really having to do that, not accepting what people are giving you. When the Ethan character and the love and them just being two people, he really teaches her what being human is. At the core of it, it doesn't matter how many powers she has, it comes down to being a creature. It comes down to feelings."
